film and theatre seminars

conducted by James Drew

The basic philosophy underlying these seminars and projects is to question the integrity of ideas put forth concerning theatre and film today.

Although a broad array of positions are introduced in the seminars, there are several common threads of active inquiry. They ask first of all why we create theatrical story telling and fiction film, they ask about Chaos Theory which is active in improvised decisions, or question formalism as a mistrust of reality. All positions are investigated in detail.

Examples come from historical sources as well as from the seminar members' own work.

seminar topics

  • Questions of Intention in Drama and Film

A discussion of the dialectic between personal reflection versus universal revelation.

  • Critical Analysis of Political Theatre

Discussion of observations concerning the dangerous borders between art and slogan.

  • Deconstructing the Myth of the Plot

Discussion of the process of discontinuity as a fixed reference point where the fragile nature of reality is closely examined while expanding the means of story telling.

  • Psychological Aspects of Music as Textural Scaffolding

What do we really "hear" in a stage or film production? This seminar investigates the emotionally charged structure of musical tones within a dramatic context.
